FLINT, MI – Some Flint residents will be given potentially life-saving equipment after the city’s fire department received a donation of 665 smoke alarms and 333 carbon monoxide alarms through Operation Save A Life.

The operation is part of a public service campaign sponsored by Kidde, the alarm manufacturer. It is designed to educate people on the dangers of fire and carbon monoxide poisoning.

The alarms were donated to MI Prevention and distributed to Michigan fire departments.

According to a Monday, Aug. 14, news release issued by the city, working smoke alarms double the chance of a successful escape in case of a fire. In 2022, Michigan saw a 23% increase in fire-related deaths, compared to the yearly average from 2017-2021.

Only 33% of Michigan homes reported having working smoke detectors in 2022, according to the city press release. Michigan saw 16 multi-fatal fires leading to 35 deaths.

The following fire safety tips were offered by the city:

● Know two ways out of every room

● Smoke alarms should be placed in every bedroom, outside sleeping areas and one on every level of the home

● Carbon monoxide detectors should be placed outside sleeping areas, in utility and mechanical rooms and one on every level of the home

● Close doors between you and the smoke, to slow the fire growth and reduce the heat

● Be a life safety hero for your family: Help loved ones develop escape plans with any mobility issues in mind
